Holden Vance III becomes Lian Glick as he attempts to visually and conceptually reinterpret the words and idea of this conceptual artist from his spoken word album "An Idea Just Out of Reach", 2009

My work is a constant reorganization of the nature of an ideological base. This does not mean that I am against Conceptual Art. It's just that I'm working within the influence of their legacy and making use of certain options they revealed for us. -Lian Glick, Conceptual Art, An Idea Just Out Of Reach, 2009, Lian Glick and Bidage Commerz

Chase Alias aka David S Pollack hopes to bring to light with his new series, "Chase Alias' Esoterically Speaking Causes his Reclusively Being, 2010-2012", attempts to convey just how backwards moving our cultural standards seem feels to Chase. As a self portrait photographer he look back in envy at the freedoms which artists used to be able to express themselves without having to worry about cultural and even legal action being taken against them.

Testing Ground [ Color Version ]

Via Flickr:
This year this was my second visit to Kumartuli during my stay of 2 weeks at Kolkata. Kumartuli is colorful and eventful almost always. There is a saying that goes like “we Hindus have 13 festivals to enjoy in 12 months”; and almost all of them need a separate kind of Idols and accessories. And Kumartuli is the one stop shop for all that.

This is a shoddy corner at Kumartulli; but probably most colorful. People test color level here; before spray painting.

I’ve posted both BW and color version of this image. Please let me know which one you like more.

Dove Fighting at the Duomo di Milano

Via Flickr:
hit “L” for a more spectacular view!
---

Today there is a shot of myself. Normally I am quite comfortable not being in front of the lens but I thought I have to show you this amazing photo. When I travel I use to do this ridiculous thing. I jump in front of every cool sight I visit. This looks quite stupid but it is a nice remembrance for the location. I will show it to my grand kids when I am old…

So this is me at the Duomo die Milano in Europe's fashion capital. You can see I tried to dress adequate :).

The cool thing is that there are pigeons all over the place. Just like in Venice… You can see them pretty clear on the photo. If you move quickly they all try to fly away and make a lot of noise.

So here I jump in front of the dome and a good friend of mine was so nice to shoot.

Recently I get a lot of emails on the topic “how do you get all your views, your favourites and comments.” Well I want to share it here because time allows me not to answer every email instantly.

My personal 10 Rules to get attention on Flickr:

1.
If you want people to interact on your stream, interact on theirs. Tell them your honest opinion, be a reliable contact.

2.
Don’t advertise on other peoples streams. Too bad I did this in the beginning of my Flickr time. I am really
sorry for every advertisement I did on somebody's stream. People will hate you, block you and sent you some harsh messages.

3.
Try to post good, interesting and unique material. Don’t try to copy this person or that person. Find your own style and present it in a nice way. Also write something to your images like feelings you had when you took it or a song that comes to your mind when you look at the photo. Be creative! Because that’s what Flickr is about!

4.
Don’t try hard to be successful or something like this. Believe me you are not! Not even if you have 10 million views. For the big guys like for example Trey Redcliff or The White house this is just peanuts. Better try to have fun with photography because if you have fun the rest will come on its own.

5.
Try out some groups in the beginning. Even though all these blinking group badges are annoying it helps you to get some nice contacts. But find the point where to stop with this and get serious contacts with whom you interact ---> See point #1

6.
Try to get your shots on Explore :) (Somehow this only happens by accident every now and then)

7.
Don’t be rude because you think you are cool! In germany we have a saying:” Grüße die Menschen auf deinem Weg nach oben, denn wenn es für dich mal nach unten geht, wirst du ihnen wieder begegnen!“ which means: Be nice to the people on your way to the top because when you fall down you will see them again“

8.
Use Creative Commons to advertise your photos. In two or three years there will be tools to automatically detect who first released a photo. So why have fear that someone could steal your image. Professional companies don’t use your photos for commercials they fear lawsuits. Creative Commons works for your advertisement all over the world 24 hours without you being active.

9.
Use other Media to get your photos around. For example Twitter, Tumblr, a blog… you know all of these platforms. Mostly you are able to automatically post your photos to all these Websites without doing any hand clap

10.
Don’t take it too serious and eat chocolate! :)

I hope this helps! See you around

Washington, DC: Viewers Impressed with International Truth-Compassion-Forbearance Art Exhibition

Via Flickr:
On December 2, 2011, the International Truth-Compassion-Forbearance Art Exhibition opened at the Alex Gallery, the largest gallery in downtown Washington, DC. The opening of the exhibition drew many viewers, some of whom shared their impressions.

Painting: Pure Call

The International Truth-Compassion-Forbearance Art Exhibition draws many viewers

Anastasia Bride, manager of the gallery

Anastasia Bride, the facility manager, has been working at this gallery for dozens of years. She said, “This exhibition is shocking. Viewers stay much longer than for other exhibitions. They ask, 'Why does such a persecution occur? What have they done?' This exhibition spurs people's interest in learning about China.”

Susanna Thornton, a photographer and filmmaker

Susanna Thornton, a photographer and filmmaker, said she liked the painting 'Homeless' the best, because it shows a girl keeping her belief under stressful conditions. She said it reminded her of Langston Hughes's poem “Hold Fast to Your Dreams.”

Rosa Dejesus (right), a medical school student from Puerto Rico

Rosa Dejesus, a medical school student from Puerto Rico, was visiting her boyfriend in DC. She said the paintings moved her, especially “Come Back, Daddy.” Without having seen the painting, she would not have learned about what is occurring in China. As a medical school student, she thought it was inconceivable that doctors were involved in harvesting organs from living Falun Gong practitioners.

Graduate student Beth Leonhardt

Graduate student Beth Leonhardt said, “When I walked in, I was drawn by the shocking paintings. These paintings are beautiful and inspiring. They are shocking and encourage viewers to learn more.”

Robert Donato, an engineer

Robert Donato, an engineer, said, “It is an eye-opening experience. I did not know the issues in China, such as persecution, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. The principle of truth and compassion is good for everyone.”

There are more than 40 paintings in the exhibition, which will run from December 2 through the 30. The gallery is located at 2106 R Street, NW, Washington, DC.

The very purpose of spirituality is self-discipline. Rather than criticizing others, we should evaluate and criticize ourselves. Ask yourself, what am I doing about my anger, my attachment, my pride, my jealousy? These are the things we should check in our day to day lives. -Dalai Lama - 5:40 AM - Public

David S Pollack aka Chase Alias hopes to bring to light with his new series, "Chase Alias' Esoterically Speaking Causes his Reclusively Being, 2010-2012", attempts to convey just how backwards moving our cultural standards seem feels to Chase. Chase Alias' Deeper Meaning: What We Found on Craigslist Series, 2005-2011

Actions cannot be accomplished with imagination. Actions can only be accomplished with actions. Interpretations or understanding of behavior are merely interpretation and understanding; they do not have a deeper meaning. "Action" and "nonaction" is the same. With regard to certain problems, we have few choices. -Ai WeiWei

As a self portrait photographer he look back in envy at the freedoms which artists used to be able to express themselves without having to worry about cultural and even legal action being taken against them.

I Love Your Way

There ain’t no other love that knows me better
I think about it all the time
And I love the way
The rebel in your kiss goes on forever
I think about it all the time"

Love Until It Hurts

Love Park in Philadelphia. This is the Robert Indiana sculpture in John F. Kennedy Plaza which was first installed in 1976. I took this a few weeks ago while visiting Phillly when I spent one evening on a blue hour shoot around the downtown.

Love Note

D60
60mm Micro
A love note to my wife.
I was listening to the song "Home" by Michael Buble. (Our unofficial theme song, since I average about 150 nights a year on the road.) The verse below sparked an idea.
"And I’ve been keeping all the letters that I wrote to you
Each one a line or two
“I’m fine baby, how are you?”
Well I would send them but I know that it’s just not enough
My words were cold and flat
And you deserve more than that"
This image was created in about 5 minutes. I had the idea, jotted down a quick note to my wife and placed it on top of an ironing board next to the window. Light coming through the sheer curtains of the hotel. I had a D60 and 60 micro with me and made the image. BTW... this is a color image.

Love each other

We must resemble each other a little in order to understand each other, but we must be a little different to love each other.
[Bisogna somigliarsi un po’ per comprendersi, ma bisogna essere un po’ diversi per amarsi]
Paul Géraldy
